M.S. in Data Science - Statistics Track

Collecting, analyzing, and understanding data has always played a crucial role in scientific endeavors. The astronomer Edwin Hubble, for example, found evidence for one of the greatest discoveries in 20th-century science, an expanding universe, with a simple regression of galaxy velocity versus distance. The physician John Snow used a map of data to identify the source of a cholera outbreak in London in 1854.

Recent advances in technology and computing have sparked enormous interest in the use of data for decision-making in industries as diverse as finance, health-care, environment protection, agriculture, transportation, and public policy. This has fueled an increasing need for statisticians and data scientists who are skilled in manipulating, analyzing, and drawing conclusions from data.

Who should enroll?

The Masters of Science in Data Science at NJIT is a joint program with the Ying Wu College of Computing. The Statistics track (MSDS-Stat) has a greater focus on the statistical aspects of data science and will provide students with an understanding of randomness, sampling, data generation, statistical inference,  modeling, data analysis, and statistical computing, which they can leverage to enter the field of machine learning, data analytics, and data science.

The program provides elective courses that allow students to tailor the program to suit their interests and goals, including topics such as probability, mathematical statistics, data visualization, and deep learning. Students will use the R statistical software and the Python programming language for data analysis and simulation.
